Muscle contraction drops off

Lymphatic vessels are squeezed by surrounding muscle. Less walking, less floor time and less varied movement mean less squeezing. Muscle mass also declines gradually after 40, which reduces the pumping surface itself.

Hormonal and circulatory changes

Falling estrogen and rising average cortisol both encourage fluid retention and inflammation around the midsection.
